COUNCIL DISTRICTS IMPACTED: All
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Planning and Development Services Department has worked with a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) made up of volunteer local builders and industry experts, the Fire Marshal’s Office, and various development process stakeholders to bring forth draft code amendments that will update the City’s adopted Building and Fire Codes to the most current suite of International Code Council (ICC) model codes. The process to update these codes is undertaken by the City every three years.
ISSUE:
It is a best safety practice for municipalities to routinely adopt the most current building and fire codes, which are updated every three years. These codes are vetted nationally across many jurisdictions and are found by design professionals, builders and material specialists to benefit community residents and taxpayers by helping maintain or improve ISO ratings, and by protecting the public safety and welfare. The City of New Braunfels is currently under the 2018 building and fire codes. Approval of the attached will update New Braunfels to the 2021 codes.
