DEPARTMENT: City Secretary’s Office
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City of New Braunfels annually allocates 15% of the previous year’s Hotel Occupancy Tax collection; the allocation is then split equally between the Arts Grants and Heritage Grants. Each year the Arts and Heritage Commissions awards grant funds to the applicants based on the following criteria for each group’s applicant.
Arts Grants - Grants to support art-related programs that also promote tourism, encouragement, promotion, improvement, and application of the arts including instrumental and vocal music, dance, drama, folk art, creative writing, architecture, design and allied fields, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic and crafts arts, motion pictures, radio television, tape and sound recording, and other arts related to the presentation, performance, execution, and exhibition of these major art forms.
Heritage Grants - Grants to support the enhancement of historical restoration and preservation projects or activities, or advertising and conducting solicitations and promotional programs to encourage tourists and convention delegates to visit preserved historic sites or museums.
For 2022 the amount allotted to each group from the Hotel Occupancy funds is $329,708.00. The Heritage applicants total request amounts are as follow:

This leaves a surplus for the Heritage Applicants of 16,012.50. The Heritage Commission voted to approve a motion to allocate the surplus to the following:
• $8,000.00 of the $16,012.50 surplus amount will be added to the 2023 HOT funds amount to be designated for the Heritage applicants.
• $8,012.50 will be utilized by the New Braunfels Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote the four Heritage applicants with a targeted digital mini advertising campaign through the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, a division of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There will be no fiscal impact to the HOT Fund for FY 2022. The amount to be utilized for ongoing CVB advertising will be absorbed in the operating allocation within the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund. This action will not increase the budget, nor will it draw from fund balance.
