Body

BACKGROUND / RATIONALE:

The City Council’s strategic priorities include using a variety of funding sources for operational and capital needs.

Humanities Texas has a call for major grant applications for community projects that seek funding to support comprehensive public programs such as lectures, seminars, and conferences; book and film discussions; interpretive exhibitions and materials; town forums and civic discussions; and teacher workshops. The grant is due on September 15, 2017. The will request a grant in the amount of $10,000 to fund the interpretive exhibit and materials for the New Braunfels Cemetery Adelsverein Unmarked Graves Project. The project is an effort to memorialize the journey and struggle of the founding men, women, and children that died shortly after their arrival to what is now present day New Braunfels, Texas. The Historic Preservation Plan for Municipal Cemeteries, completed in 2010, verified the location of a field of graves consisting of hundreds of unmarked burials, in the New Braunfels Cemetery. The deaths occurred in such rapid succession that coffins and tombstones were not available for the burials. The City Cemetery Committee begun planning the New Braunfels Cemetery Adelsverein Unmarked Graves Project in 2013 based on recommendations from the Historic Preservation Plan. The project design and planning for the memorial concludes in October 2017.  The goal of the committee is to unveil the memorial in 2020, coinciding with the 175th anniversary of the founding of New Braunfels.
