Presentation and update on floating aquatic vegetation management in the Comal River.

Body

BACKGROUND / RATIONALE:

At the March 25, 2019 City Council meeting, City Council directed staff to work with Dr. Thom Hardy (Texas State University-Meadows Center) and Mr. Alan Stigall (homeowner on Lake Dunlap) to work out logistics and anticipated cost associated with the removal of floating aquatic vegetation from the Comal River.

Staff has since met several times with Dr. Hardy, Meadows Center staff, and Mr. Stigall to discuss locations and logistics for the removal of floating aquatic vegetation. Meadows Center staff tested removal equipment on May 7th to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of removing floating aquatic vegetation in Landa Park at the downstream portion of Landa Lake immediately upstream of the Landa Park bridge and behind the Landa Park Train Depot. During the testing of the removal equipment, it became apparent that removal at this location would not be feasible.

Mr. Stigall will report to City Council on alternative floating vegetation removal methods that can be field tested.
