BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Police Department

The previously approved Ordinance 23-1170 recognized the nine additional Police Officer positions included in the FY 2024 Proposed Budget for the Police Department. This amendment proposes to reclassify one (1) Police Officer position to the rank of Corporal, working toward the goal of the Police Department to have a dedicated Corporal on every patrol shift.

This strategic decision aims to empower supervisors to provide direct and immediate guidance to Officers, optimizing their performance and maintaining a higher standard of service delivery for the community. The addition of these eventual Corporal positions would also ensure consistent and qualified supervision, fostering a more effective and organized operational environment.

ISSUE:

N/A

FISCAL IMPACT:

The approval of this item will have minimal impact on the department’s expenditures due to current officers having received step-up pay for assuming supervisory responsibilities since January 2023.  This item will establish the position change so that the department utilizes salary budget versus step-up pay.
